1. "Although you cannot get pregnant for engaging in oral sex, you can still get a sexually transmitted disease."
2. "Talk to your partner about their sexual history."
3. "If you're unsure of your partner's sexual history, always use condom."
4. "Never let anyone pressure you into giving or receiving oral sex."
5. "Getting an STD is a serious problem."
What causes vaginal itching
Vaginal itching can happen whether a woman is a child or an adult. But what causes the itchiness and how do we avoid it?
Vaginal itching may be caused by irritation or infection in the vaginal area. The skin may also be sensitive when in contact with products like soaps, shampoo, lubricants, and condoms; vaginal douching; underwear; sweat; among others. It is usually common among women.
In DZMM's "Private Nights," Dr. Lulu Marquez discussed the common causes of vaginal itching.
1. Bacterial infection
There may be healthy bacteria in the body, but bad bacteria can cause vaginal itching which involves a burning sensation and foul odor.
A woman can also acquire bacterial vaginosis, an infection caused by too much of a certain bacteria that changes the balance of "good" and "bad" bacteria. This causes itchiness, inflammation, and thin discharge with bad odor.
2. Fungal infection
According to the Mayo Clinic, fungus candida causes vaginal yeast infection especially if there is an imbalance between natural yeast in the body and lactobacillus bacteria. It is usually characterized by itchiness, thick discharge with a cheese-like quality.
Overgrowth of yeast may stem from:
- use of antibiotic which may cause the undergrowth of lactobacillus bacteria in the vagina
- uncontrolled diabetes
- oral contraceptives
3. Sexually transmitted disease (STD)
STDs may cause itchiness, bleeding, painful urination, and even pain during intercourse.
Some of the diseases may be transmitted with sexual contact:
- type of herpes simplex virus that enters the body through small breaks in the skin
- caused by HPV and looks like skin-colored growths in genital areas
- bacterial infection of the genital tract
- bacterial infection of the genital tract which may also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes, or anus
- caused by a microscopic parasite that spreads through intercourse with an infected patient
- a bacterial infection that affects the genitals, skin, and mucous membranes
Menopause can cause swelling, itching, and irritation in the vaginal area because of the thinning mucosal lining due to low production of estrogen. It may also make intercourse more uncomfortable because of dryness and other symptoms like vaginal atrophy.
5. Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Becoming pregnant and even breastfeeding may also cause vaginal itching because of hormonal fluctuations.
Vaginal thrush is a yeast infection that can occur when one is pregnant because of glycogen which helps thrush to thrive.
Irritation may also occur because of vaginal discharge during pregnancy which may give way to infection.
Chemicals from various products may also cause irritation. Products like soaps, feminine wash, detergents, scented papers or even condoms may contain irritants that can cause itching.
7. Skin problems
Conditions like lichen sclerosus makes skin patchy and thinner than usual. This condition may be seen in parts of the genital area, particularly the vulva for the females.
Vaginal itching is not permanent, and there are ways on how to deal with it. Marquez reminds patients to not hesitate visit your ob-gyne for physical examination and possible drug prescriptions.
