DepEd: Anti-bullying law applies to teachers too
The Department of Education (DepEd) reminded teachers that the new anti-bullying policy also applies to them.
DepEd Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro also welcomed the signing of the anti-bullying law which protects students from bullying and other forms of violence that may be inflicted not only by their fellow students, but adults and persons of authority as well.
Under DepEd Order No. 40, teachers who humiliate students, scold them in front of their classmates, and require them to stand and face the wall could face administrative sanctions.
"Bullying and other forms of violence in schools should be viewed not just a school problem but as a societal problem as well," Luistro explained.
Luistro added that the new law further enhances DepEd's existing Child Protection Policy which aims to protect the well-being of children.
"The anti-bullying law is a big boost in our continuing push to develop our schools into safe and caring, learner-centered institutions," he said.
DepEd is set to consult with stakeholders from other sectors and begin drafting the implementing rules and regulations of the anti-bullying law.
Republic Act 10627 or The Anti-Bullying Act of 2013 requires elementary and secondary schools to adopt policies to prevent and address acts of bullying. School administrators who fail to comply with the requirements of the law would be meted appropriate sanctions determined by DepEd.
